Sometimes (rarely) it can take 15-45 minutes to work - if I were you I'd keep within dashing distance of a toilet because it's bound to come out sooner or later.

Not necessarily. I have been there and, in fact, I'm still there though with relief. A week after my son was born, I was back in the ER because of it. They finally had to give me a molasses enema, after other meds, before anything happened.

GlycoLax is what I use now. It's a powder that helps the colon absorb water to help you go. Ask the doctor for a prescription for that. If that doesn't work, ask about the molasses thing. Did the constipation come on all of a sudden? It could be a blockage. Narcotics can also cause the problem, which doctors don't happen to mention before they use them and don't seem to take much notice of this side affect. Have you had surgery or some other kind of pain for which narcotics have been prescribed? My constipation originally started right before I got pregnant when I was in the hospital for 2 and a half weeks with pancreatitis and was on IV morphine for days.

Yes, a gastroenterologist is a good idea. He's the one who prescribes the GlacoLax.

Sometimes it can take about 5 or 10 minutes after the enema is done to get the urge to go to the bathroom but I would recommend getting back in touch with the doctor in the a.m. if you still haven't noticed any improvement. I would also recommend a consultation with a gastroenterologist (doctor that diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders of the digestive system) to see if they can help you to figure out what's going on if you haven't already.

The longer you hold the enema in the better it will work. Also, how you position yourself when you are administering the enema. Lay on your left side with your right leg bent and raised towards your chest. Try to hold it. Sometimes, a stool softener warmed and melted and mixed in the enema helps a lot too.

I had an enema before and I had an urge after about a minute, it doesnt sound good, I would definently go back to your doctor. Do you run at all. If you do, try going for a 30 minute run, that usually causes a BM in most people.

Good luck

If you are desperate, take a whole ton of vitamin C. It will clean you out. Take 1000 mg with breakfast and 500 mg an hour later if nothing has happened.

That happens sometimes, not often but sometimes.

If you are taking any kind of pain medicine, that will cause terrible constipation. ?Vicodin, percoset, percodan, oxycontin, codeine, lortab, norco all cause constipation.

Try milk of magnesia (over the counter). Tastes gross, but works great.
