Interesting question which kind of begs the question how much can a man appreciate his own physical beauty before he is defined as gay? To me being gay is so much more than just about physical attraction. It is about an emotionally intimate bond, an electricty, a connection. All kinds of men bond for all kinds of reasons, without being necessarily what I would define as gay. Therefore in the examples you cite it is a bit of a debatable point. Is he admiring the physical form out of some kind of envy/aspiration or even ideal? or is he doing it because he finds something deeply attractive that makes him feel 'different', even connected (however briefly) with the object of his fantasy? It is quite a personal thing, but not a question that is as easy to answer, as it might at first appear!
