I assume that this is a desktop and not a laptop? Laptops are not generally upgradeable.
Further to earlier comments, try installing Belarc
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
This will look at your system and advise you on your motherboard details including all the slots available.
If you do not have a PCI-e slot you will not be able to use a PCI-e card, simple as that.
If you have an AGP slot you will still be able to use a 512mb card such as the X1950 Pro.
If you don't have either PCI-e or AGP slots, you will have integrated graphics on your motherboard, which will be sharing your system RAM. This is not going to be upgradeable, I'm afraid, and worst yet, is not really capable of running the majority of recent games. Only option here is to spend a little less on the gfx card and buy a new motherboard as well, with the slots you want. Have to make sure that it is compliant with your CPU though, which might be a problem if your PC is fairly old.

Hi,
If you would like a specfic answer it would be good to give you motherboard make and model number, a few us would look up what spec it has. if its less than a year old it may have an PCIe slot, and any one will do as it depends on your budget, i use a 256mb nvdia pcie card and it plays all the online games and stuff i can throw at it, have a look at www.ebuyer.com for some prices.... but it would be best to check if you have the slot 1st!
hope this helps a little...

To find out excatly what you need go to www.crucial,com
let it scan your system
It will give the graphic info as well as the memory info in it's scan
Write it down post it at a forum like Toms Hardware or PC World forums
or take it to a shop with you and they can tell you what you need.

most motherboards are either a.g.p or pci-express,theres no middle ground so your motherboard must be either pci-express or agp
the quickest and easiest way adam is to download and run a program called cpu-z from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php,once you run this its shows a window with your cpu, motherboard and graphics sub-system on it
armed with this information you can either..1)contact me with the motherboards make and model no and i will find out the information you need to know or 2)locate and download the motherboards manual to find the info yourself
another utility you can use is called "EVEREST Ultimate Edition" from http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=3&ps=UE&lang=en,this gives you loads of information on all parts of your p.c including motherboard, graphics, memory and much more, its a really handy program to have on your p.c and extremely handy
any problems adam let me know
good luck mate!

Tough luck if you do not have a true graphics expansion port (8x AGP or x16 PCIe). Your PC is really a business machine.
If you have at least 1x PCIe, here are a few cards for you:
