I have a 2000 RC51. A little insight if you're unfamiliar: 1000CC water cooled V-Twin from Honda. Redlines at 10500RPM. The engine temp usually never sees past 230 degrees, unless I'm stuck in traffic, which rarely happens, but can.

Anyways. I'm wondering if I could switch to 10w-30 to help circulate the oil better. I normally use 10-40, but a buddy of mine bought 10w-30 for his and noticed it a lot thinner and looks like it would circulate a lot better than the 10-40. (He's using Lucas Motorcycle oil).

The temps here are anywhere from 30-90 degrees. I usually ride when it's above 50.

My question is, can I switch to 10w-30 for the colder months ahead? I'm using synthetic motorcycle oil (usually Mobil1 or something along that line). And will 10w-30 hold up in 90-100 degree weather?

Mobil 1 is the best you can use. There are about a thousand idiots who will tell you to use thicker oil to protect better, but you've obviously figured out that thinner oil flows better, particularly in tight clearances, which is what you need. Mobil 1 10W30 will protect better than petroleum based 20W50, hold up to the heat better, flow in the cold better and last longer.

Honda calls for 10/40 in that bike
google oil weights so you know what you're talking about

If you are going to use a different oil use

castrol r4 full synthetic 5/40 superbike oil
that is what the factory race team in wsbk used on Colin Edwards bike

I am on my second rc51 2000 had 24000 on the clock with no problems. It has been over 100 here every summer I have had a RC51
I ride in the south and my bike always stays around 200 220 when in the mountains riding agressive run the 5/40

Don't use full synthetic your clutch will slip! WTF? you need to stick to the cuisers because you are clueless about sportbikes

10 bucks a quart and your bike will shift better as well
you can get it at cyclegear or denniskirk.com

i hope the Mobil 1 that you are using is for bike and not cars.
car oil bubbles and creates air pockets witch can cause damage to the Eng.or clutch.
use what the bike calls for. that's it! it was designed to use that oil in the heat or cold. if you have a wet clutch don't use full synthetic it may cause clutch slip.
the bike is water cooled you should not have to worry about it over heating.even in hot weather.if its cold start it and wait till the bike heats up to temp before going for a ride.
i live in Florida and ride a 93 Honda VT1100 so i know it can get hot but just use what you told to by the owners manuel and you will be good ot go!
