I'd always thought you should use Murphy Oil Soap, the I just found a very convincing article that say to NEVER use Murphy Oil Soap. The article says it will just leave you with years of residue that would make any future re-coating of your varnish very difficult.

The article says to use water, water and vinegar, or water and alcohol. It's very important to vacuum first because loose dirt is an abrasive and can mar the finish of your floor.

I don't think I completely answered your question, but maybe this information will help.

Go and get a microfiber duster/mop a couple refill heads... It doesn't cost much and the heads are washable ... Just don't use fabric softner on them and let them air dry.. .Go over the floors with the dry head of the mop....Pick up any loose dirt... Or you can vacuum the floors.. Next get your mop and bucket and fill with cool water and about 1 c. of vinegar... Wet mop and wring out so it's only slightly wet.. You do not want a really wet mop on wood floors it will warp them....!! Mop in the direction of the grain.. I would use the dry head of the microfiber mop to dry floor but, you can let it air dry....
