It's a critical question to ask if you've suffered from it once before, but unfortunately there have been few studies done on the recurrance of hyperemesis in subsequent pregnancies.

A study done in Scotland is one of the few out there that followed women for a sufficient length of time to determine the recurrance of this condition. Here is what the study found:

159 women with HG were studied. Of these 56 went on to have a second baby. Of the 56 women, 27 of them had HG again, so roughly 40%.

You can read more about the study here

So I guess the short answer is....you have about a 50/50 chance. I know the sickness is miserable but there is one comfort and that is it appears to have no adverse affects on the fetus when the mother receives good medical care. In fact, their rates of fetal death are lower than women who have NO sickness during pregnancy.

In my personal experience, I have had 3 pregnancies that have all been about the same as far as morning sickness goes - basically it's 24/7 nausea and some vomiting which lasts until the 5th month.

I had morning sickness with all 3 of my children. With the first 2 it lasted until the last trimester. In one month I lost 10 pounds due to the constant vomiting. With my last pregnancy the morning sickness ended after the 4th month. My sister didn't have any morning sickness, lucky her! Good Luck!!
