Yes, absolutely, but here's another suggestion. Depending on where you live in the USA, see if you can find a local sewing club, county extension agent, or better still, some little ole grandma with time to share. Perhaps you have a relative that knows how to get you started ? A neighbor or friend at church ? If you let someone know that you are excited about learning, they will be exciting about helping you. As a teenager, I made most of my clothes and later on, my wedding gown. I saved a fortune in clothes and enjoyed creating my own unique outfits. You might save $$$ by buying patterns on Ebay. Also, ask ladies browsing in the fabric departments of stores..........how to learn...... you may find a teacher. Good luck.

Yes you can. I would suggest, though, that you check out the sewing machine you want to buy, before spending money on it. I have bought a machine from them that turned out to be a real lemon. (Not Walmart's fault.) The next machine I bought from them is so difficult that I have to have my son-in-law thread it for me. There's nothing like the sewing machines they used to build 20 years ago, that didn't have all the electronics in them. Finally, I heard they were only closing some of the fabric depts. in the Walmart stores that didn't make enough profit. I would suggest that you watch for sales at JoAnn's, and stock up. I used to work at one and they have some pretty good bargains. Personally I don't sew my own clothes anymore, I can buy them cheaper.

That's not necessarily saving money!! It is making your clothes unique! Fabrics are very expensive. Walmart is closing all it's fabric and crafts areas soon. Don't get too used to their cheap prices!!!
I can buy less expensive clothing than I can make!! Of course, when you get good at sewing, you can sell your talents by altering other's "sale" clothing as well as yours.
But . . . Yes, you can learn to sew from a book and a less expensive sewing machine. It just gets more expensive when you understand the $2/yd fabric is not top quality. It is good to learn on tho.

If you haven't bought the machine, I would suggest you go to Sears and get a Kenmore machine made by Janome. Same price range but better quality. Also, you will get better fitting clothes but not necessarily cheaper clothes. I've been sewing a long time but I don't really save as many $$ as you would think. Fabrics and notions are expensive. RTW clothes you can find on sale. But its lots of fun!!! Check out www.patternreview.com.

I'm sure there's plenty of information on that subject. Type "learn how to sew" in your search engine for starters. Also go to bookstores and libraries and you'll find more than enough information there. Also ask older female relatives and friends because they came from a generation where it was a common thing for women to do those tasks (not being sexist, just stating truth).

I have to agree that making your own clothes isn't cheaper anymore. When you start adding buttons and zippers, it can add up.
But you can definitely save on mending and alterations. You might save some money on kids clothes.
Not all of the Walmart fabric departments are closing. The ones with high volume are still open. The one near me has lots and lots of quilters. So they have a large stock of those $1 a yard cottons in addition to the $2-something a yard quilting cotton.

If you are good with your hands and are of moderate intelligence you should be able to do it.Just practice on scraps or old clothes. The more you do it the better you will get.
