When you have a second baby, do they just cut open your old scar to deliver the baby or do they make a incision in another spot?

They will cut through the old scar and it will heal up again just as well as the first and eventually fade and get very light.

It all depends on your unique situation. My family genes do not consist of "birthing hips", so there are many women in my family who have had all thier children by c-section. I, myself, have had 2 children by c-section. It basically depends on how your old scar healed, the way your skin scars, and what condition your scar is in when it comes time to deliver your second baby. Quite a few women in my family were able to have the new incision cut by using their old incision. There were a few that needed to have a seperate incision made because when their skin would heal, their scars would be very thick and rough. The doctors did not want to use the old scar in those situations because (1) the scar was so thick and rough that it would be difficult to cut through without tearing the skin surrounding it and (2) if a second scar were to grow on top of these old big scars, it would produce a fairly large scar that could cause complications with the surrounding skin and with the uterine wall. In my situation, I had to have a seperate scar, but not for the reason I just mentioned. At 7 months during my second pregnancy, I had to go to the ER because I was having extremely sharp pains in my old scar. After examining me, they found out that my skin was extremely weak around the scar and the weight of the baby was tearing the old scar open, so I had to have an emergency c-section. They did not want to use my old scar because of the weakness in the skin around it, so my newer scar is slightly above my old scar. But they are both so thin that they are not that noticeable anyway.
Hope this answers your question. Good Luck!

I had an "emergency" c-section with my first son. They were able to do a horizontal, or bikini cut. The original cut was no more than four inches and now, 21 months later is about two and a half inches. I live in L.A. and wear itty bitty bikinis- you'd never know I had a c-section. The scar is permanent, but shrinks and fades. I am now less than 6 weeks away from having my second son. I am scheduled for a c-section because my pelvis is too small (ischial spines are too close) to deliver a baby. Most doctors actually prefer to do repeat c-section, there are risks for uterine tears during a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) although, there are risks for c-sections too (it's actually a major abdominal surgery) My doctor said that he will actually be removing the first scar during the c-section and I'll have a whole new one that'll heal fade and shrink. I'm hoping it'll heal a little nicer, my first did what is called keliod (sp?) where the skin raises a bit, but it doesn't bother me. At the end, it's all about a healthy baby. Hope that helps

I had two different doctors with both of my c-sections. For my second c-section the doctor just cut along the old incision. I'm on my third pregnancy now and the doctor is going to do the same thing...he's going to cut along the original incision. I'm not sure if it depends on your doctor's preference or if it's a medical issue but it seems like that's what they like to do is cut along the original incision. Good luck!

I am assuming you are asking about the outer scar. If you had the low-horizontal cut, yes, they open the old scar and redo it usually. If you had a vertical scar, it's optional. I have a vertical scar and I personally don't want a second low-horizontal scar. I know a gal that has both and wasn't happy about it.

Unless there is some problem, they should cut through the old scar. I have read that you should discuss it with your doctor just to be sure.

Whatever you do, for the guy's sake, don't wear a bikini again.
