depends on the show -- most folks are so happy to see themselves on tv that they just up and do it for free!!!

It may depend on the show and what you are doing on the show. I am guessing you mean shows like Extreme Makeover - Home Edition. The people whose home is replaced get the new home. The primary contractor gets paid some, but much less than they would to build the same house for anyone else. Ty & the design team are paid by ABC. Many of the workers are volunteers.
