I have ot go to this orientation before they will let me make an appointment and the next one isn't till Sept 12, I will be 9 weeks by then. they said unless its an emergency they won't see me till at least 10 weeks, but more likely 11 or 12. I will be out of my first trimester by then and I have so many questions...does this seem wrong to anyone else? Have you had to deal with this at all?

That is not at all unheard of, but it is unfortunate. The first trimester is so critical in the development of babies and seeing the doctor can make help a mom-to-be learn about pregnancy. If you are going to stay with the doctor's office, make sure that you are taking a prenatal vitamin (you can get some OTC) and that you are taking care of yourself. You don't have to stay with this office though, you could find a new office. Some places do what is called a "confirmation appointment" around 6-8 weeks, and basically confirm that the pregnancy hormone is there and get you on a prenatal. No matter what you decide to do, you can get some great resources and do some research on your own. The book WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING gave me soooo much peace of mind during my first pregnancy. Good luck and congrats!

You aren't seeing military doctors by any chance, are you? They did that to me at Bethesda. I was only out there for a month and just needed one appointment while I was there, and they still made me sit through that stupid orientation!
My doctors (the ones that will actually be delivering my baby) wouldn't see me until at least 8 weeks. It was hard for me too because I had so many questions, I would be twice as anxious waiting for 12 weeks. But I don't think it is dangerous or anything. If you aren't comfortable with what your doctors are doing, you should certainly find another if you can.
Good luck and congrats!

I had the same thing. Doctor's tend to make you wait that long to make sure that the pregnancy is viable. Under ten weeks there is such and high risk of miscarriage that they tend to want to wait until there is more development. During the orientation that I was so against going to, the nurse answered a lot of the questions that I was wanting information about.

MANY doctors dont see patients til 10-12 weeks. Risk of miscarrage decreases after first trimester. I was extremely high risk for preterm labor and wasnt seen til 13 weeks. Then due to my high risk pregnancy I was seen weekly. Yes you have questions but every medical office is different most dont see you til 8-12 weeks.

Our clinic does not see a newly pregnant mom until 10-12 weeks either unless (a) she has a medical problem or (b) Mom is 35 or more or a minor or (c) has had multiple miscarriages or fetus/baby with certain birth defects. However, the nurses can answer most of your basic questions. Just make a list.

The orientation is where they can answer your questions. I just had my first appt. yesterday at 8 and a half weeks, and when I scheduled it they said they would want to see me between 8-10 weeks. There isn't much to do, just get your lab work ordered and do a pap smear. The same thing happened with my first pregnancy.

Thats strange, usually they want to see you right away. Try going to a new doc. But if you REALLY like this one then you would be ok until then. With my son (now 7months) I first went when I was 22weeks becuase of insurance reasons, and now I am 10wks and I JUST went to see the doc. If you are not feeling bad or in danger or anything then it should be ok, you can always research for answers to your questions. (Plus every doctor tells you different things! They all have thier own opinions on things.

Believe it or not, this is normal protocol. Get some books (my favorite is The Pregnancy Book by Dr Sears) and maybe they will answer some of your questions. Or if that is not satisfactory, could you find another doctor or go see a midwife perhaps....

I didn't see my doctor until 11 weeks, so it's not unusual for a woman to go that long before she sees a doctor. However, if they are refusing to see you when you want to come in, I might consider seeing another doctor. It's important that you get all your questions answered.
