My sister is 18 weeks pregnant with her second child. She does not lead a very healthy lifestyle and has struggled with drug and alcohol addictions for several years. A few nights ago, she passed out for a few minutes before she was conscious again. Her blood pressure had hovered anywhere between 60/30-75/40 since then. She is still in the hospital. The doctors have ran 2 or 3 EEGs and are planning an EKG in the next 24 hours. I am unable to be with her or talk to any of the doctors at this time. My mother and sister are not the brightest and they don't understand 100% what is going on. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be going on? My mom has said that they aren't telling her anything. My sis's appetite has weakened, she can feel the baby moving, and she feels as if there is a heavy weight on her chest. She said that there should be no reason for any drug tests to come back positive. That's really about all I know.

Although a woman's circulatory system undergoes a lot of changes during pregnancy, there might be some other cause for your sister's blood pressure. I would just continue to let the doctors monitor her and run the tests and see what turns up. Your sister might be experiencing some anxiety which is contributing to the discomfort.

One of the main causes of low blood pressure is dehydration, but there are a million things that could be causing it. Also, when a woman is pregnant and her total blood volume increases, many people believe your blood pressure should be higher. This is not the case, because there are internal control mechanisms that regular your blood pressure by making your blood vessels dilate, reducing pressure. It's possible she is just having some kind of exaggerated vasodilation response. Just a thought.
You aren't going to get any accurate answers here. Your sister and parents need to ask more questions of the doctor, and if the doctors don't know why this is happening they should just tell your family that - and contrary to popular belief doctors aren't gods and can't always tell 100% what is going on. Hopefully they will figure it out and correct the problem and all will be well.

pregnancy can lower your blood pressure, i have always had high blood pressure (140s/100s) but currently at 22 weeks i am 100s/70s. obviously her blood pressure got too low. it would be a wonderful thing if she truely has not been drinking or doing drugs, but the scary thing about addictions is that they don't just go away - for pregnancy or any other reason. i hope the drug tests are negative, but in a normal healthy pregnancy, blood pressure does not go that low. maybe it is from withdrawal or some other drug-related side effect. i hope for the best for your family, and hopefully you will get some answers soon.
