It's like the standard measurements. The US uses "inches" and "feet" (based on the measurements of a king) but everyone else uses "centimeters" and "meters". Since we are already used to the current measurements, people feel like there is no need to change, no matter how easier it is.
And for your question on why the shoe sizes are different for each gender...men tend to have larger feet than women, it's all part of evolution. Companies therefore, make the men sizes larger.

I don't think there is such a big difference in general. I have found that i am generally the same size in shoe or even smaller than women of around the same height. I think that when men are developing they have bigger growth spurts as this in our genetic makeup which accounts for slightly bigger feet on average. I have discovered that knowing a womans shoe size does not relate exactly to foot size due to the way mens and womens shoes fit. Meaning women wear fitted shoes and men have looser shoes.

Cause women have smaller and thinner feet than men do. (generally speaking). Hmmm thats a good question...are they really the same in other countries?? Maybe its cause North America wanted to make yet ANOTHER different between it, n the rest of the world (mainly Britain and its colonies)...cause we spell things differently, talk differently, drive on the right whereas they drive on the left....even our measurements are different....sry I was just totally rambling on there...hahaha!

I believe part of the reasoning is because women's feet are shaped a bit differently and are usually narrower than men's feet.

because men have bigger feet...do you really want them to be the same size? i mean then it would be pointless to have different styles so men would be wearing flats and women would have on construction boots
