If the transfer case seems to be shifting by itself, it sound like the detents in the case may be wearing. A lot of miles on the truck or a lot of shifting back and forth between 2WD and 4WD? A detent is like a little groove in a rod that keeps the transfer case in the range you selected. Same thing with your transmission, it has detents too. Sometimes detents can get worn and your truck can start to shift itself. Transfer cases are one of the easier major components on a vehicle to disassemble and rebuild, so an honest shop should be able to fix it without being too outrageous on cost. Hope this helps.

This is an odd one. The only recommendation I have is that you are standing still (idling) when you shift the transfer case from two to four or four to two wheel drive.
If you were in 4 low it might pop out when you exceeded 25 miles per hour and, as I recall, in 4 high the max recommended speed is 50 miles per hour.
So, if it were not perfectly "in" or "out" of 4WD Low or High this might occur and you just were not aware of this until it popped out.
Maybe someone took it out for some off-roading when you were not looking. Wink, wink.
Good Luck!

put the transmission in neutral,
then shift the transfer case to the different ranges..
if 2wd is all that won't work it may need an adjustment

Have you looked underneath the vehicle? Maybe you have something going on with the rear driveshaft.
