In one of the Star Wars novels, it's established that Han as a young orphan was partially raised by a kindly Wookiee lady - almost like a mother to him. I forget her name.

But anyway, that's why he can understand Chewbacca.

(Princess Leia understands Wookiee language to a lesser degree, having learned it in her diplomacy career.)

When you work with and hang out with Someone that long, I think it naturally happens. Not to mention he sent away for that coarse on how to speak Wookie in twenty-eight days or your money back program. I think it came with a free Muzzy doll. These programs are not available in our galaxy system ( postage would be too high) (I tried already)! Plus, they were out of the Klingon Language Tapes at the time, which were on back order! P.S. Don't forget He also understood Guido the Bounty Hunter, the one he shot in the Cantina and he also understood Jaba the Hut! Multi - Lingual!
So actually he signed up for the buy two get one free program. That's my guess!

Han's among the fortunate few humans who can understand Wookiee, but he doesn't speak it. In one of the Han Solo books (Han Solo at Stars' End), Brian Daley writes that "few humans understood Wookiee; fewer still had the range and force of voice to speak it."

in one of the star wars books, and i can't remember the name of the book. Han solo was raised or was taken care of by a Wookiee, or something like that......so in a sense he was raised around the language. Hope this helps.
