why are people so hung up on looks, what they eat...etc....If I want to pig out on really "bad for you" food, I will! If I want to dress like a slob I WILL....life is short...as long as you aren't hurting anyone else, why not live it up?

My theory is, if it doesn't hurt anyone else, just do it. So, I totally agree with you. However, I want my short life to be enjoyable, so I try to eat healthy most of the time and pig out every once in a while. That way, I am not depriving myself, and I can still be semi healthy. No matter what you look like, you will always find a friend. The world is too huge and has been around for too long for anyone to do anything truly shocking. I dress up a lot because it makes me feel good, but I also don't give a rat's behind if I go to the grocery store in paint-covered sweat pants, flip flops, and a holey t-shirt. Do what makes you feel good, and don't hurt anyone.

(notice that I did not say "don't OFFEND anyone"...there's a huge difference hee hee)

It's not that cut and dried. A diagnosis of cancer isn't always a death sentence. If the cancer is caught early, is isolated to one site, it can often be simply removed, possibly some radiation or chemo to eliminate any leftover cells...and you'll die of old age. I would find out all I could about the type of cancer I have, about my particular situation, and about treatment options. I'd arm myself with all the information I could, and then I'd decide. But I certainly wouldn't base my decision on whether or not I'll lose my hair or a breast or something like that. Those are just superficial things.

I guess it's just a matter of comfort. I am not particularly fashion-conscious, but I know that there are social mores that help a society function in some semblance of order. I am not the healthiest eater in the world (just look in my chocolate cupboard), but if I want to live long enough to enjoy lfie the way I want to, I have to be sensible enough to eat well so my body can last the journey.

These are just examples, as you clearly explained-- but why care what society thinks? Well, we're all connected. I don't particularly care if society thinks I'm the world's best dresser or public speaker or banker or actress or whatever-- but being able to fit in somewhere, even a little, gives people a sense of belonging, and that in turn gives people peace of mind.

If you aren't troubled by these things-- then no, live it up by all means! Bear in mind, though, that you would still have to understand the way others live and respect their right to conform, just as it is YOUR right NOT to.

A thought-provoking and difficult one to answer. Bravo.

I'll go along with dressing the way I want, but if I dont watch my diet, I wont be able to enjoy the life I have left. Truthfully, I'd love to pig out and get to be the size of a house, but I'd still like to be able to ride a roller coaster now and then and they have weight requirements. Stuff like that.

life is short for a lot of people. But on average its 7 decades for a whole bunch of people which doesnt seem short to me at all. Being hung up on looks is part of the game of life if u go into a interview looking like a slob ur not going to get the job the neat and tidy decsent one will get the job. People eat good food because it keeps them healthy to all the things we need to do in a days work and you might live a little longer. Each breath you take each moment u spend is important time so it needs to be spent wisely!
Also its just not the way the world works living it up thats is thats how bumbs are created

Well, it would be easy to live that way if everybody else did too.
When you're the only slob in a group, it'll be pretty hard to feel good about yourselves.
And "pigging out" isn't very good for your health.
It'll just ensure that your life is short.

The deal is, you might die in the next few moments, or you might live for another 40 years. You should plan for both possibilities. Write your will, and be sure there's some money in your 401K. My drivers' ed teacher said it well. "Plan for the worst and hope for the best."

because we are being judged by God for our actions. Also there is an afterlife. So no you aren't just going to vanish away from the world. You will be judged and rightfully placed.
