It sounds like fuel. You need three things for an engine to run.Fuel, spark and combustion. It is usually a spark or fuel problem. I would first check for fuel .I believe 1986 was the last year for a carburetor.Start by removing the air cleaner and look the down the front barrels while pushing on the throttle. You should see fuel squirting into the carburetor. If it is fuel injection you need to check electrical system. You can cheat and spray ether or carburetor cleaner into the carburetor or throttle body while cranking the engine. If it does not start then check for fire by removing one of the spark plugs and grounding the plug and look for a spark.Once you determine the problem you may want to buy a Haynes or Peterson repair manual for about twenty dollars. Another great information source is Alldata. You can access an electronic manual for your vehicle for about thirty dollars for one year.http://www.alldata.com/

If it is fuel injected, check to make sure the fuel pump works. Usually, you will hear some kind of sound from the fuel pump when you turn the ignition key to run before you start it. If carburated, then follow the other suggestions already posted.

It's 21 years old after all, and it could be any of a number of things. What is your mechanic telling you? He can see it, we can't.
