I definitely know that the Parties (Democrats and Republicans) have strayed way off and do not act in accordance with what they are supposed to stand for.
Part of this can be accounted for in that politicians are soliciting all the votes they can get, so they try to be everything to everyone.
Of course, at some point they need to take a stand.
Then there is the problem of their being above the law; almost anything goes. Sen. Ed Kennedy never stood trial for the death of Mary Jo Kapekne at Chappaquiddick!

Speaking as a conservative, and of my elected officials, the Republican Party needs to be purged.
There are a few exceptions and they showed themselves when the issue of immigration and amnesty came up.
