Today is my last day of work and I don't want to shake my boss's hand on my way out the door. Please do not reply with jokes. Let me know if you can think of a professional way that when he asks, I can not have to shake his hand. What can I say to explain?

He is sick and after I would not have time to wash my hands. I know he won't understand if I say it is because he is sick.

I can only come up with three ways that wouldn't give offense:
1. Grab a box so that your hands are not free;
2. Hit the first aid kit or a nearby drugstore, wrap your hand and say that you somehow injured it (or got a rash or something); or
3. Just walk up to him with a smile and say "I have plans so I don't have time to talk but it was great working with you" and clap him on the back as you walk out of the door.

Carry a bunch of stuff in your hands, so you don't have a free hand to shake with. Just smile and give a wave.

Honestly, though, it's a little petty and unprofessional to not shake his hand, even assuming he's a total jerk or you're a complete germphobe. Just do it, and call him all the nasty names you want once you're out the door.

Dont offer your hand and if he puts out his hand first, just nod and say something simple, like,"I've learned a lot working here". That's neither positive or negative. You dont owe anyone an explanation. It would probably help if you had something in your hands that would make it impossible to shake hands. It's a cop-out-but I know it works.

You have a germ phobia? Either that or try to walk quickly out of there and just wave from a distance. That's worked for me a few times.
