As you can see by the answers, there is no way to tell what the actual equation means without parentheses.
It could be any of the following:
(7/8)y - 8 = 6
(7/8)y = 14
(1/8)y = 2
y = 16
7/(8y) - 8 = 6
7/(8y) = 14
8y = 7/14
112y = 7
y = 1/16
7/(8y - 8) = 6
8y - 8 = 7/6
8y = 7/6 + 8
8y = 7/6 + 48/6
8y = (7 + 48)/6
8y = 55/6
y = 55/48
y = 1 7/48

If the problem is (7/8)y - 8 = 6, then y = 16. If the problem is 7/(8y) - 8 = 6, then y = 1/16.

So far you have 3 different answers! I think the confusion lies in if the variable y is in the denominator or not. I'm going to assume it is not:
(7/8) y - 8 = 6 First add 8 to both sides:
(7/8) y = 14 Now multiply both sides by 8/7
y = 16

7/(8y-8) = 6
7 = 48y - 48
y = 55/48
-----------
You need to add a parenthesis. Otherwise, it could be (7/8)y - 8 = 6, or 7/(8y) - 8 = 6

Assuming question is:-
(7/8) y - 8 = 6
(7/8) y = 14
y = (8/7) x 14
y = 8 x 2
y = 16
PS
To avoid confusion , please use brackets. We can but guess what the question is meant to be.

I presume you mean solve for y
7/(8y) -8=6
7/(8y) = -2
y = -16/7
