Consider an old 69-78 sohc Honda 750 or '73-'86 Kawasaki KZ 900-1000-1100. They were tough bikes, they made lots of them, junkyards are full of them and things like oil filters, points, etc are still very easy to find at JC Whitney. Buy a shop manual and most minor repairs can be done with the factory tool kit. Make sure the engine turns over before you buy and perferabaly it runs. Rotted seats are much easier to replace than are worn rings or burned valves. Take a good look at the exhaust system, scratched and bent you can live with, rusted out won't pass safety inspections. If it looks crappy cosmetically, so what? Call it a rat bike and ride.

If you are patient you can probably find a broken down bike for that price.

I would wait a tad until the riding season is over though. You will get a better deal then most likely.

Try to find a bike that has mostly cosmetic damage. Some bikes can look a total mess.....like there is no way ever they would run again. But underneath all that torn up mess is a very serviceable bike. Sometimes all they need is a lot of labour to get back on the road.

Also, if you do find a bike in need of repair, make sure you can get the parts necessary to make it run. More than once I have bought a broken bike with plans to repair it, only to find that parts are not available. This is a pain in the butt, believe me.

First, learn to spell; you're making us Tennesseeans look bad. Next, go up on The Dragon, and look over any cliff--I guarantee you'll see your pick of motorcycles down the hill. Try to find a friend who has a winch and a truck. Scale down the mountain, hook-up, and haul away. These bikes are all wrecked, so insurance paid them off a long time ago. Spare parts are readily available. Cost you your time, some gas, and a beer or two for your buddy with the truck--Happy Hunting.
