WE, yes all us and our need to have the latest and greatest toys and to excel over the status quo. plain English GREED and the means to fill it.
if your scratching your head let me break it down for you
1) The break down of the nuclear fam, you remember mom and dad working together to raise a socially conscious or just a responsible child. But now every one works and we put the stuff in our lives ahead of the people and relationships and yet we justify it be saying"I only want the best for them"
2) Money, Bitches and Hoes... We as a society degrade each other and only feel better if we feel we are better than some one else.
3) We have sold out to China and Wall Mart so we can enjoy the the good life. China took advantage of us being sell outs and now owns enough US stocks and commodities that it can cause a depression by dumping them on the world market. Wall mart buys everything not made in the USA and when they come in to a town they drive the small businesses out and make it were you must depend on them cause no one can compete.
4) The loss of God in our lives, family and community. If you have greed in you life it is hard to fit God into it.
If you fix the last it will take care of the rest

The only threat I see is people mistrusting the government in the future. But, hopefully, that can be avoided if the next president is better.
As for American's being 'poorly educated', I don't agree with that. The last time I checked, America contained nearly 75 of the top 100 colleges in the world, with one of the highest secondary education rates in the world. (kids moving on to college) While our High School's are falling behind, our superior college education makes up for what the High School's lack.
Also, a small Econimic factor may hamper the America of the future. The large debt is a concern.

Partisanship as it distracts America from meaningfully attacking real international issues.
America can not look within for its future, it must always look outwards, even to space, if possible.
If America loses its technical and technological advantages, someone else will take advantage of the new opportunities.
In the same way that Europe in 1492 stood at the edge of global domination, Twenty First Century America has the best chance to develop the military advantage and economic riches of Asteroid mining, Lunar and Martian development.

Socialism.
Socialism is like Robin Hood taking from the rich to give to the poor. The difference is that the rich is the working people, the poor is the sloppy people and Robin is keeping most of the money to himself and his entourage.
The system punishes hard work and rewards (and buys) loyalty. In the end, all other threats are a consequence of socialism.

The biggest threat to the America I love is partisan politics. Our founding fathers would be sick of what our government has degenerated into. People on both sides of the aisle cannot agree on how to eliminate a threat (terrorist) to our country and the American way of life. I remember the minutes and days right after September 11 when American flag were flown on every porch. I remember a nation resolved to get the job done and politics be damned. We are one nation and it is time we start acting like that. There is a time an place to disagree but once a decision is made, it needs to be seen through to the end. God bless the USA and condemn the terrorist to he!!.

Probably lack of any motivation of young people. I blame their parents more than I blame them. We've had it too good for too long and the younger generation have become spoiled and ensconced in this sense of entitlement. The education/knowledge level in this country is becoming a joke. I think it's the one thing that could actually lead to the "fall of our empire".
************EDIT********************
Mister X-- having top colleges means nothing if average Joe American can't point to his country on a globe. Most kids in elementary school in Europe and Asia do things our high schoolers can barely muster. Many other statistics indicate our average education level is falling ever further behind the rest of the civilized world. Tech industries have to import any brains they need from India and China. Don't kid yourself!
And educated people mistrusting the government is a GOOD thing-- uneducated people trusting it is the WORST thing.

Deficit Spending & Fiscal Irresponsiblity
We are selling chunks of this country off to foreign countries. We spend more than what we have, our children are being born into debt. When we outsource jobs, we are also guilty of shortsighted spending, what we save in the short term, we lose in jobs. When we hire illegal immigrants, an american loses a job, calling them guest workers or undocumented workers does not make this problem any easier. The greatest investment we as a country can make would be in education. We are not even in the top twenty for literacy.

Partisainship on the part of American citizens. We actually don't have that large of a political spectrum in America. The libs and the cons go back and forth, but the fact is, on a scale of 1 to 10, libs are about a 4.5 and cons are a 5.5, compared to the rest of the world's political views. Still, people foam at the mouth over the silliest things instead of working together to make our country stronger. It's sad.

Socialism in academia.
They are even doing it in pre-school now.
In the Hilltop pre school in Washington, the teachers banned legos because they represented an expression of capitalism "contrary to the values we are trying to teach our children"
This is the beginning of the end. They're getting them young now because their argument and vision for the future of this country does not hold water with mature intelligent people.
