Of course it's not rare. It's not necessarily "safe." Most say term is 37-40 weeks and chances are your baby will be in the NICU at least a week if you have him at 36 weeks. It happened to me.

Delivering At 36 Weeks

Actually, we kinda like to see you deliver after at least 37 weeks, since 36 weeks is considered premature. Although there is some new research showing that some babies born before 38 and a half weeks are at risk for problems commonly associated with premature babies. It's not terribly rare to deliver at 36 weeks, but it's better for your baby to be born at 38 weeks or later. Of course there are also risks associated with having a baby after 42 weeks too, so the best is if you deliver your baby between 38 and 41 weeks, which is when most women spontaneously go into labor (isn't it nice how it works that way)

Technically, they say 28 weeks is about the first time a baby has a chance of living, but of course that would be with a LOT of NICU time. As time progresses, odds get better every day. A pregnancy is considered to be full-term at 38 weeks (although 40 is an average) and they don't expect complications at that point. So at 36 weeks, there still could be some serious issues (usually with lung development), but with proper care, they baby would have a very good chance of being ok. And yes, 36 weeks is rare unless there are other circumstances such as multiples or health issues. Congratulations on your little boy. Don't take any risks. If you think you are going into labor and not just having Braxton-Hicks contractions, call your OB now!

I would not say it's rare to go into labor at 36 weeks, but the goal is to get to 37-38 wks at least. The baby's lungs are fully developed at this point in pregnancy and can be born with no complications. The doc is a bit concerned that our baby is going to be on the big side, because my son was 10lbs 10.5 oz when he was born via c-section 2 wks late. So at 37 wks they are doing an ultrasound to estimate our daughters weight. If at 37 wks she is at or near a certain weight they will schedule a c-section before she gets any bigger.
I assume you are just trying to see at what point your baby could be born and still be okay just incase you go into labor early. If you are thinking of trying to just start your labor early i would not do that unless the doc says there is concern and does it in the hospital.

I am 35 weeks and saw my doctor two days ago. I have a singleton and my doctor has stated that if I go into labor she would not do anything to prevent delivery. My doctor stated that at this close unless you are underweight or off track in some way that the baby will be fine to deliver at 35-36 weeks. good luck!

It's possible to have the baby at 36 weeks and he could be fine (i had my son at 36 weeks due to complications) but they will stop your labor if it starts that early.. normally they wont allow it unless your past 37 weeks..

Besides you'd feel horrible if he came that early and had to be on breathing machines because his lungs were under developed.. Just hang it there, it's almost over!!!

Good luck

you can be fine at 36 weeks and some people are induced at 36 for medical reasons. Your doctor is going to hold off as long as he can to make sure the baby is safe.

It is possible to have a baby at 36 weeks, but not best. 37 weeks is considered full term. If it is your first baby, don't get your hopes up too much. A high percentage of first time mothers have their babies late. Just hang in there. Baby will come when he/she is ready!

It can happen but you say you dont' have much fluid around him? They need the fluid to "swim" around in and turn if you don't have much he may stay where he is. My twins were born at 32wks gestation and both were breech, but three days earlier one was breech and other was head down so even with two in there mine had enough room to still move. You can go into labour regardless of what position the baby is in, but the birthing process is much more difficult if the baby isn't head down. Thats because the head is designed to move and shape to the birth canal the butt won't be as flexible which can lead to emergency c-sections, episiotomey, forceps. I have had both VD & C-section and recovery was about the same for both. C=section I didn't walk til the next morning (3pm birth) VD I walked later that night.
