Mysterious, not clear of understanding; The Mona Lisa is said to have "an enigmatic smile". For a long time she was thought to be Leonardo, himself in drag; that would have explained the mystery quite well, wouldn't it? but she was someone else.

He/she is puzzling in that there seems to be more going on with him/her than you can clearly see, and it intrigues you.
