I live in Florida, just had a large tree about 40 or so ft tall removed. It was near the house cost $250 and they ground out the roots and stump. Chipped up the Logs and limbs and took it all away. Filled in the hole. It took 3 guys about 2 hours.
To keep the cost down you husband may be able to rent the equipment.

Personally I'd hire it done. It seems silly to go out and buy or rent $500 worth of equipment to take down one tree! However, if he is like my husband (stubborn) he'll do what he wants to do when he wants to do it! I just make sure that his will is up-to-date and I know where all the important papers are kept in case I lose the argument. If you and he don't care how much $ gets spent on this little escapade, then let him have some fun.
However I am on the side of hiring someone to do things like this. We hired a firm to take out a big dead tree and I was amazed that it literally disappeared in a very short time. The proper equipment made all the difference. There was no mess and they handled the hauling & disposing of all those wood chips. Stump disappeared too.

If he knows what he is doing, I'd say it might be ok. But if you are asking this question, I'd say you are not feeling so sure. I think it may put your mind at ease if you have a professional come in and take care of the job. It tends to be a bit pricey at times. 40ft is nothing to joke about! and if a pro comes in, they can always grind up the stump for you so its not an eyesore. good luck

Seems to me if he worked for the parks and did this himself then he should be able to do it! He would also know how dangerous it can be and wouldn't jeprodize his life and limp just to save a few bucks.

I say let him..if he then realizes he's gotten to deep over his own head, then call in the big boys with the big toys.

Meanwhile....let him so you how much of a man's man he is!!
