there is a ship headed to mars right now called PHOENIX.
Due to land May 25, 2008
its going to search the soil around the artic pole on mars.
they believe thats the MOST likely place to find life since it has frozen water there. the believe that water near the core is heated enough to sustain bacterial life forms and the heat might push them to the top of the surface near the pole.

I hope they do find signs of life.
or maybe they're hiding really really well.

So far, we don't know if there is--or ever was--life on Mars. What is really interesting about the findings from the Mars rovers and orbiting satellites around Mars in the last few years is that it is certainly possible.
We now know Mars has water--not much by Earth standards--but quit a bit. And we know Mars once had a thicker atmosphere--plus a number of other factors that show life could exist--at least in the past.
The newest (Poenix) spacecraft just launched by NASA is supposed to land in the Martian north polar region next year. If it is successful, scientists hope to find evidence of organic compounds, etc.
It's still a little early to hope that that probe will actually find proof of life on Mars--but we are learning more and more about where to look and what to look for. So "stay tuned!" :)

As of now, we don't know if there is life on Mars. There are no missions there right now to look for life but missions to do so are in the planning stages. The next Mars explorer is scheduled to launch in the fall of 2009. It will have on-board sensors to look for signs of life, like proteins and amino acids.

Right now there isn't any proof. but later next year i think a space probe will go through the polar cap on mars (A.K.A. the top) and will see if there is life specimens

Yes, there are 2 mechanical lifeforms that have endured the harsh Martian land for much longer than it's creators had anticipated.
Can't wait until they evolve a consciousness...

Until we've explored the surface, we really won't know.
