I have a HP dv9000 and love it. We had a problem and hp paid both way shipping! I would get Windows Vista Premium. 1GB or more. A good graphic card 7400 256mb VR., and a core 2 duo.
You will want dual core I have it and could not survive without it.

My recommendation is to watch the sales at Dell.
We have 7 Dells in the family and have not had 1 problem to date.
If you are willing to spend $750 you should be able to get a laptop with:
15.4" monitor;
160GB hard drive;
2G RAM;
wi-fi built in;
core2duo processor (1.8GHz or 2.1GHz);
head phone/microphone jacks;
USB ports;
Windows Vista or XP if you prefer;
opt for no "trial" ware if you can
My brother just purchased a Dell Inspiron as described above on sale for $550. So watch the sales and get your best deal.
BTW, Circuit City; Best Buy; etc., etc. ARE NOT where the best prices are. If you want to look over various manufacturers pc's then go there an look, but if you really want the most PC for your money, go to the manufacturers web sit.
Hope this helps.

I just got a great laptop from CircuitCity at http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Acer-Aspire-15-4-Widescreen-Notebook-PC-5630-6288/sem/rpsm/oid/185213/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
It is a little over $750 but it is a great value from Acer (other laptops with the same hardware can cost up to $1000).
