Are there any dangerous sharks in the Red Sea?

I am going there on a liveaboard (living on a boat) for a week and its my first ever diving. Is it all cool?

I have heard they are there. I ran into this Shark up close inthe Atlantic Ocean. The coast guard told me it was a 14' great white. http://swimdownhill.com/_wsn/page9.html

There are Sharks an a person did die in when a diver that was well out of the normal tourist areas about 30 km away was fatally attacked. Before that nobody for 5 years was killed. If you only swim where you are allowed and encouraged you will have no reason not to just admire the supervises and see many sharks and other fish that tourists in oil and plastic are not the preferred diet

Wow - you are in for a treat - congratulations!

If this is your first trip out there be prepared to be blown away!!

Sharks? Red Sea? Dangerous? Sure - they have big teeth, eat things and a desire to hunt but mainly they keep away from divers. For example Sharl Reef in Sharm no longer has any (?) sharks apparently because the bubbles put them off.

Anyway the standard drill is to let sharks have their own territory and not attempt to encroach on it.

Sharks may show interest in you which is normal but if they start circling, humping their backs and looking agitated it is time to gently move away.

Good tips if it looks like they are getting too interested is to get your back to the reef (So they cannot circle round you) and to have something handy to hit them on the snout with! Maybe a shaker (noise maker) or pair of scissors etc.

I do not know anyone who has actually had to hit a shark but apparently their snouts are very sensitive so hitting them there is as good a place as any.

Reality - If you do see a shark - it will make your day. You will get back onto you boat whooping and hollering with the rest of your buddies.

Danger? - not if you listen to your brief and - at least till you are happy - dive in the team that has the most experienced dive leader / guide in it.

And tell them at the brief that you may feel a bit nervous. If anyone laughs - put them down as a nerd!

Diving is great, I live on the Med and dive 2 or 3 times a week. But be careful darling, I think anybody who puts an avatar like that on, and clearly is not them, must be a bit weedy otherwise they would put their own pic on.

So take care of yourself. There are no dangerous sharks in the red sea with a habit of attacking humans, but if there are with a physique like that you should be able to handle it. Did you see that video on the news yesterday with those guys in spain who jumped on that shark with a net and captured it by hand. Now they had real physiques

wow very jealous, i used to dive guide in the Red Sea based out of Hurghada and i have been lucky enough to do a number of Liveaboards, as to you question on sharks, the Red Sea is abundant with them and i have been lucky enough to dive with sharks on numerous occasions. All sharks can be dangerous but they rarely attack divers, if you are lucky you may spot
grey reef
white tips
black tips
threshers
oceanic white tips
tigers
hammerheads
basking
whale
and there has been a couple of sighting of white sharks but this is only word of mouth

Just enjoy your dive and follow a couple of simple rules,
do not dive with any open wounds or if you are menstrating (not sure if your a women)
on deep water dives keep close to the reef
do not enter the water if they have just chucked in the remains of lunch
remove all shiny jewelary e.g earing, neckless's, watches
sharks are attracted to shiny objects

You are going to have the time of your life, relax and enjoy

I went snorkelling off a boat in the red sea. if there were dangerous sharks that wouldn't be allowed.

Iam a diving instructor just come back from red sea ... all i can say is take note of keely l as she is correct ... dont take any notice of charlie or amir b as they obsualy no sod all about diving or the red sea or what is in the sea

Yes! The gray reef shark, the blacktail shark and thats your lot ,oh and also tiger sharks, so watch yourself when you are swimming!.
