My best friend Jillian and I promised each other that we wouldn't ever smoke or drink until we were at least of age. But it seems that everyone at my school has already smoked and drank and we're only in 8th grade! Does anyone out there have a plan NOT to do that?

I never really saw the point in smoking because of all of the health problems should you become addicted (which many who try it a few times do). Not to mention it stinks and makes the smoker and anyone in a closed area w/ them smell bad.

Drinking I never really cared for until I was old enough and I still do not abuse it by drinking until drunk - an occasional drink with a meal or cold beer if one prefers is a far cry from shots at the bar or a six pack a day. Alcohol takes a bit more maturity than most teens (and sadly, many adults) are ready to deal with - especially if caught or involved in an accident b/c you're drunk. There is enough stuff to deal with as a teen - no need to add negative things to it such as drugs, alcohol or smoking.

I think it is nice to have a support system like your friends to keep you from being peer-pressured to drink and smoke. I am a whole lot older than you, and therefore am of age to do all that bad stuff to myself if I want to, but I will tell you this: peer pressure goes on well beyond school. I'm 27 years old and I STILL feel like I have to drink at a party if everyone else is drinking- and I HATE drinking! It makes me so sick every time, and I hate throwing up. Just stick with your friends and your plan, don't get too mad at any of your friends if they break their promise, and don't judge any of the other members of your class who DO drink and smoke- just be happy in your heart that you're not doing it.

Almost of people around 7th grade+ have already started drinking or smoking, because of family problems. I am a Freshman and I don't see as much drinking and smoking as much as I saw in middle school. It should get better! But as you can see alot of people have already done that because they don't feel good about themselves, so they drink and smoke to let the tension off of them. I have one thing to say, Don't do that! It's makes your life span shorter each time you breath in a breath of smoke, and you might not know when to stop drinkning until you have had too much. Not only that but it's illiegal! Alot of people in your grade may say they have been drinkning and/ or smoking, but most of them may not of. Just try and stay away from the groups that say they do. So a lot of people won't think of you wrong. A lot of people do have that plan you have, they just don't show it. Don't worry, you'll find someone who has the same goals as you!

I'm in 7th grade. I plan to stay sober and clean forever. When I'm of age I may have a drink every now and then like at a formal event. But no smoking for me! That just ruins your body. I agree with you and your freind- these other people at your school are hurting themselves. I'm glad you and Jillian are going the right way, just like me.

I hope you stay that way! Don't give in to pressure and have a fun school year!
Good luck!

I have the same plan. I don't know anyone my age (8th grade) that has ever smoked or drank before, so you and your friend are not the only ones.

If you don't have an addictive personality or an alcoholism in your family I don't see a reason not to drink.Although it pays to be sensible and smart when it comes to vices. Everyone has always planned NOT to get into any vices but temptations and dares are abound and it's up to you to stand up to these or bend to these kind of things. Stick to your plans and be strongminded at all times. Where I came from we don't have any drinking age or speed limit.Had my first drink at 9 years old and it felt good for a while but as one gets older so are the vices and you realize your life's not going anywhere except to the next bottle in the bar or the next high. So my advice to you is study hard, be strongminded when it comes to temptations AND you don't have to smoke or drink to look cool or be cool.

eh my friends a lot of us in 7th and 8th grade really hated the drug/drinking scene, my best friend of 13 years asked me in 8th grade to "robo-trip" with her, which is take like an entire model of Robutussin (very harmful) and you get a "high". I'm no longer friends with her, she went down an unfortunate road and I told her my views on that stuff and some may argue I should have remained friends with her but I don't need that influence in my life. In 8th grade is the only time I have drank alcohol, didn't get drunk, never did it again. I have never done any drugs and my plan with that is just stand my ground, a lot of the "drug crowd" has some really nice guys and gals who are fun to talk to during classes, but I just know how to tell people I'm drug free (and proud) and even if they think I'm a loser now WHO CARES!! I'll show them who's a loser at our 20 year high school reunion when I'm living out my life dreams of a beautiful house, family, and such.. and they are bumming around still on their drugs. Actually they probably won't even go to any high school reunion...

But, my point is, some people do drugs and just experiement a little in High school, sometimes it effects their grades and they can't get into any good colleges. But some people experiment with drugs and get addicted and ruin their lives with drugs, watch the TV show Intervention it's on at like 9 or 10 pm on Fridays on channel A&E.

"just say no" and never feel bad!! Be proud you chose to enjoy your life naturally!

I'm LDS so I plan on not smoking or drinking ever. I feel like there's no good reason to smoke, and whenever I ask people why they started they can't give me an answer because there's no reason to do it. Also, alcohol is way worse for you when you're young.
So keep going, it's worth it I promise!

I have never smoked and don't plan to it's disgusting

I'm 21 and I still don't really drink maybe one everyone few months, but I never drank in high school.

But its a good plan stick with it no matter how hard it is. It makes you a better person for not giving into peer pressure and doing what you shouldn't.

I promised myself I would never ever ever ever smoke. It is a disgusting, terrible habit, and it KILLS you. I really don't know why anyone does it. All this stuff goes on at my school too. What people don't realize is the kids aren't lying, I've seen kids in 7th grade smoking and drinking, and it's because the stuff is sooooo easy to get. Kids are starting earlier and earlier, and its just gonna kill them faster. The same goes for drugs. They are pointless, and i don't see why you need them.

p.s. I live in a perfectly nice town, it's not like all these kids have bad families of "reasons" to use.
