It varies depending on the city. Some places have a low cost of living, but also they have lower wage jobs to go right along with it.
the house
studio
guest house
any thing
Renting a house can run you 1000-3000 a month, depending on where you live, and not including bills.
Studios and guest houses, apartments also, usually run from 500-2000 a month.
Food- if you want to eat quality food, not all the processed crap that comes cheap will run you AT LEAST $50 a week-and that's ONLY if you don't eat out. If you go to restaurants etc. it will probably run you 100. So 200-400 a month for food.
Electric bill will probably be 50-150 dollars.
Mobile will vary- depends on how much you plan to use it, if you don't plan to have a landline it will probably run you at LEAST 30 a month.
You also will have to pay money for the university AND the books. You'll need to buy a printer for school, supplies etc.
You'll need money for transportation as well.
If you're going somewhere where the cost of living is higher, California, New York, Florida, I'd say you need just 4,000-5,000 dollars for the first month to get settled. It sounds like a lot, but the people will want you to pay up front in cash for rent. You'll probably have unexpected expenses you need to take care of-that 5,000 won't last you long.
If it's a lower cost area 2000-3000.
But that's depending on how well you manage money.

Welcome to the USA.
The house. Depends whether you rent a little apartment, or rent just one room where you divide the costs between other roommates. It depends. It's can be between $600/month to $100/month.
Food is like $10 to $20/week for one person (this is if you buy cheap foods and store them in the fridge and cook your own food). If you go to restaurants, you'll end up paying a lot more money on food! If know how to cook, you'll be able to save lots of money.) The electric bill for a house can be around $200/month during the summer, because the AC is running. If you have roommates, you can split the costs. Usually the electricity is around $80 to $140 if it's not extremely hot or cold. The water bill is about $20-30/month. High speed internet costs about $50/month. If you want to have a cell phone, it's about $50/month. If you want to drive a car, that will cost you about $160/month. The car insurance, which you must pay, is around $80-100, and you need to buy gas too. A used car which still runs fine costs about $2000.
So, you're looking at about $1000/month. You may end up spending less or more depending on where you go and how you like to spend money. A cheap place to live is in midwest and Southeast ("the red states"). California, Alaska, Arizona and generally the West Coast and the Northeast are more expensive.
While in America, you may want to buy a computer (a cheap computer costs about $100) and go on the internet and join a freecycle group.
http://www.freecycle.org
Freecycle is a network of online forums where people tell each other what stuff they do not need anymore. So, instead of throwing things away, they share stuff. Every city in America has one freecycle group. I got lots of valuable things from freecycle. For example, I got a big azalea bush one time for free. I have given away a computer hard drive and books for free...

It really depends on what state or city your going to be living in. It would cost more to rent a house than it would an apartment. Where I live theres some apartments for rent for $500 without utilities and other for $900. So it varies on how big and if utilities are included. If your living by yourself food won't be that big of an expense. My fiance and I generally spend $40 a week on groceries. Hope this helps a little. My best advice would be to get ahold of some local papers where you planning to move and look in their classifieds for a place to stay. Good Luck! And I hope you enjoy the US!

My advice? The US is expensive compared to India. I suggest finding work here while you go to school so you can get by,
Rent can cost 700.00 US dollars alone for a low cost yet decent monthly housing.
My advice is pick a city with good public transportation. In many cities in the US, owning a car is part of living expenses. If you live somewhere you can go without, you would be doing your wallet a favor.
Ignore the guy who says not to come here. I applaud you coming here to further your education. Just be prepared for a great dent in the wallet and culture shock.

Just as asking what's india like? would be a ridiculous question, so is this. Costs vary substantially from city to city, state to state, so you should repost with specifics to get a real answer.

properly, a gallon is slightly below 4 liters, and over right here a gallon expenditures basically over $4, so i could say somewhat over $a million a liter... possibly $a million.10 USD a liter? that's basically rapid, tough estimating, so do no longer quote me on it. And does your government heavily administration oil expenditures? Over right here, our government does not administration it, yet we've the oil companies and OPEC jacking it up intense sufficient, and the government taxing the hell out of it.

It really just depends on what you are looking for. Living costs in the US vary greatly depending on the town/state you plan to live in. You should really decide the placce you want to live first, then research housing costs.

it depends on where you live. larger cities cost more. if you can live with other people, you can share expenses. don't carry a lot of cash. get traveler's checks so if they're lost of stolen, you won't suffer. you really need to get in touch with the university to find out these things. or specify here which college it is in which town.

Stay where you are. It is very expensive to live here. You will be very unhappy here.
On the other hand, you might like Mexico. Since everyone from there has moved here, you can live very cheaply in Mexico.
