How does one create a melody for a song? Writing lyrics I understand, but understanding the melody part of it is eluding me.

Can someone help explain this? How do certain notes go good with others, while others do not? Are there rules in creating melodies?

Please help!! Thank you!

Not to be brutal, but if you don't know, please don't write a song. We have enough people who can't speak English trying to write poems in English. Don't compound matters.

Ok, as a songwriter from years ago, I'll give you a couple of fundamentals. First you must know the key you sing in. Let's say it is key of C for the sake of the lesson. The three primary chords in this key are C, F, and G. Your song lyrics need to fit a pattern eg. 8 to the bar or 6 to the bar. Could even be 8 to one and 6 to the next, but it needs to repeat. Once you get to that point, strum along as you sing to get a rhythm and chord changes that sounds good. Then you can start adding in filler notes and runs to enhance the sound. When you finish, you should have a passable song.

You have to hear the song in your head before you can write it down. You don't need to play any specific instruments, but you need to be able to "sing your lyrics" or you'll never be able to create a melody...it has to start in your head. Think of the lyrics...do they sound like a country western or a hip-hop...that will get you into the right beat...after you have a beat or style in mind, think of someone who does that kind of music and imagine how they'd sing your lyrics. If you hear something worth remembering, start singing it yourself. If you don't know much about music or writing music, then record your vocal and take it to someone who does.

that's the best you can hope for...good luck

No rules. Close your eyes and go with what sounds good to you. It's your song - no one can tell you how to play it.
