Why do we call the abusers of the abuse reports on yahoo answers, "trolls"?

In myth and folklore tales/ films, Trolls could be quite pleasant and helpful creatures, if a tad ugly.

The "trolls" referred to here however are, in my opinion, spineless, gutless, cowardly moronic individuals of extremely low intelligence who need to realise that there are and will be, a reaction (consequence) for their actions.

It is simple physics after all....... Anyone else agree?

I think of trolls as nasty uglies that hid in wait for travelers and charged them a fee (or robbed them) when they crossed the bridge. But since I have been here, I am mixed up as to what even the Yahoo trolls are.

It's just one of those abused words. I know tons of words that are used up like that but I cant think of any right now. :/

Well..like for example the word "penis"...ppl just call each a "penis" for no reason and it's offensive. And as far as I know..a penis means a male sexual organ not some dumb, ignorant person.

it has nothing to do with traditional trolls such as the ones in folklore and such, the word troll according to the dictionary says this

#1 To fish for by trailing a baited line from behind a slowly moving boat.
# 2 To fish in by trailing a baited line: troll the lake for bass.

also another slang definition can be found: To patrol (an area) in search for someone or something: "Criminals troll bus stations for young runaways"

in this case trolls are using threads or questions as the bait.
a parallel is drawn between trolling for bass and trolling for attention in the virtual world.

You are probably right but there is nothing we can do about it. The reason for the name, could be because trolls are often misinterpreted, due to the fact people are shallow and think ugly things are bad.

It's post-modern and ironic for trolls to be good. To me troll means bad.
P.S. Wow Bistro! Impressive bullsh*tting!
