I have a central vacuum and love it.
It is a single built-in unit usually housed in the garage or basement.
With 3-5 times more cleaning power than most portable vacuum cleaners you get a superior clean in less time. Since the central vacuum is located in the garage or basement it can have bigger heavier motors. This power will give a deep down clean and pick up that thread you usually have to go over three times to pick up. The standard model recommended has an airflow of 185 cfm (cubic feet per minute), compared with 60 to 90 cfm from a portable.
Just connect the lightweight hose to any conveniently located inlet installed around the house. No heavy unit to pull, push or drag up stairs, no switches, and no electrical cords to keep tripping over.

A central vacuum is one that has hoses in the wall and run throughout the house, usually there are outlets near your normal electrical outlets and there is one central collection point somewhere in the home. All you have to do is plug the actual hose into the wall outlet and that turns it on. There are brush attachments that come with it that need electricity which is why the outlets are near the electrical plugs in the house. The whole system is pretty convenient especially if you live in a multi-level house as there is no actual bulky vacuum, just a hose, to carry around.

Simply insert the lightweight hose into a wall inlet. Powerful cleaning suction begins immediately. Remove the hose and the system shuts off. Best of all, there’s no cumbersome vacuum cleaner to lug from room to room or up and down stairs.
Central vacuum systems totally eliminate the re-circulation of dirty air inside your living area. With 3-5 times more cleaning power than most portable vacuum cleaners you get a superior clean in less time.
Since the central vacuum is located in the garage or basement, it can have bigger heavier motors.

It is a vacuum centrally located in your home, typically the basement. It's huge!! The vacuum piping is then run through the house and you have outlets just like electric outlets. You "plug" your vacuum hose into the outlets and vacuum away. The dirt and dust collects in the central location and you empty from there. You don't have to lug all of your attachments, etc. from room to room. It's pretty neat, really. My sister had one. Very expensive though. But, that's my sis. Always the spender.

Central Vacuuming is located within the walls of the home, with outlets you would plug a hose into located in each room.

It's a vacuum system that is installed into the house. You plug a hose into the outlets in the rooms and vacuum. That way you don't have to lug around the vacuum cleaner. I have never actually used on, but it seems like it would be cool.

You're right...it's a built-in vacuum system. My aunt and uncle have one at their house, but they still have a regular vacuum as well as they don't use the central vac that much.
One of those options I think you could live without, in my opinion.

If this is an option you are interested in, I suggest you get one with retractable hoses. The hoses are actually in the wall. No lugging heavy hoses around the house.
