The day she met me and I asked her out so I asked her where she would like to go for dinner. Her initial reply was that she liked the BRAAI like (the South African barbecue) but on that day she said that it would take to long so we went to a restaurant instead. Like 2 years later, on her 24th birthday me and a couple of my friends organized a suprise BRAAI party. Everyone had loads of fun and after the party they went home. I stayed back but she didn't talk to me because I was the only one who didnt give her a present. So I decided to propose and went down on one knee. I showed her the ring and proposed to her. She was so surprised and she said yes. We kissed and till this day she said that was the best birthday present she ever had.

I think the proposal is best if it feels comfortable to the person doing the asking. I think it should be done in a way that matches the character and natural tendency of the person so it doesn't come off as phony or contrived by someone else or as something they found in an Internet chat room. :)
And personally I don't think selecting to propose on a holiday i.e., Thanksgiving, New Years or Valentines Day, etc., is very romantic at all.
I think the sweetest proposal I ever heard of was perhaps also the simplest.
Boy waits to some random Friday morning.
Boy and Girl are going about their daily morning ritual - yes, at this point they were live-in partners. Boy hands Girl a cup of fresh made coffee while she is sitting at her bedroom vanity, half dressed, fixing her hair.
Boy crouches down so he is eye-level with Girl and in a few simple sentences and in gentle tone tells girl that mornings like this, with her, forever, is all he could ever hope for himself.
WILL YOU MARRY ME!
Girl, never saw it coming!
Girl shows up for work floating on air. Few in the office get anything done! But hold on! Boy is not done!
Boy pre-arranged to have flowers arrive at the office about 10AM with a note - Hey? Having a good day? How's about we do Happy Hour later at _____? Invite everyone from work who can make it! Drinks are on me! Let's celebrate.
Bring a tear to your eye simple!

If I wanted to propose to someone I would do like this: I would put a letter in her postbox a day I Know my love is free and at home, in the letter I say that he/she must come to her favorite shop and search there for an other clue (I would in advance had been in the shop, talked to them and hide somewhere in the shopan other letter, easy to find obviously!), in that letter I would say to him/her that at ...o'clock I wait for him/her in a coffeshop or other fine place. Once there I would be waiting with a god caque, flowers and a proposal ring and a lot of love!!!!

I'm married. My wife is not native to this country. I went there on her birthday, had her sister translate my proposal into her native language, got on my knees in the middle of the restaurant with her family around us and proposed to her in her language. There wasn't a dry eye there.
It did help that her sister wrote in an older archaic and very sappy dialect.
