There are a lot of inconsistencies with the laws on age and consent in this country (the UK). This is largely due to pre-existing legislation for certain things (e.g. marriage, sexual intercourse) being in conflict with somewhat newer legislation brought in for other topics.

At the age of 16 you can legally marry, have children and be in the armed services, paying your full tax contribution and chain smoking cigarettes. At the same time you have no right to vote and are not allowed to purchase alcohol for a further 2 years.

That someone can pay taxes and serve their country whilst being denied the right to vote strikes me as the biggest disparity.

The sex and 16 thing comes from the - some would say - outdated notion that a girl of 16 would be married and having sex. The laws were put in place before life changed so much and we have our society of today.

Nude photographs have always predominately been about one thing - titilation. I say, predominately, because someone somewhere right now is coming up with the "art" argument. For the purposes you are describing, we are referring to sex.

That is why a girl can have sex at 16 and cannot be photographed nude until she is 18. 18 is legally considered an adult - married or not.

Decisions made at 16 or 18 can affect you for a lifetime. Many people have had serious problems in their lives and careers for making the bad decision to allow nude photos to be taken of them.
