Does it work... well it will clear the water for a few days, but long term... no.
The best thing for you to do is change about 25% of the water in the tank while cleaning the gravel with a gravel siphon and then add carbon or change the carbon in your filter. That will remove what is causing the smell and clear the water as well.
Do a 25% water change once a week and change the carbon monthly to keep the tank clean and odor free.

it will help clear the water a little but not the smell. best bet is to changewater and clean tank.

It safer for the fish to do your partial water changes.
