If you go back to the pet store they sell ich medication.

While ich is a problem for scaleless fish, it doesn't mean you can't use traditional methods, just that you need to use these more cautiously. Either the heat and salt or heat and medication will work, but you should only begin treatment at half the dose and work slowly to increase it.

Since the loach will be more sensitive, it might be to your advantage to move the loach to a separate tank/container to treat it (as well as any other sensitive species such as tetras or catfish) while treating the rest of the tank normally. This gives any other fish the full treatment faster.

What you move the fish into doesn't need to be a full set-up - a bare tank or even a plastic storage box will work, as long as you have an airstone or filter for aeration and a heater or room where you can keep the water at the correct temperature. Just watch water changes, since this won't be cycled, and you'll need to replace any medication/salt removed by partial water changes (use Quick Cure, which has malachite green & formalin, and the dosage is 1 drop per gallon for something effective and easy to calculate the replacement dose).

Your experience is a good arguement for why new fish should be quarantined for 1-2 weeks before you add them to an established tank.

When fish get ich at our pet store, we usually use a medication to treat them. I can't remember what its called now, but here are some tips:

Raise the water temp
Make sure all carbon is out of the filter
And make sure the medication you are using is okay for all other species in the tank.

This is a really good site for info on Ich:

I wouldn't take the fish back. Chances are all the fish in that tank had ich. Quareetine the loach and treat him for a couple days. Treat your tank as well for a couple days. You can getthe meds at your local fish store.

Clown Loaches are difficult to rid of Ick because they are a scaleless fish. This means most medications and any salt treatments are out of the question. Turn the heater up to about 88 degrees. This will kill the parasites, and hopefully leave your fish alive. The only other option would be to find some Ick medication specially made for scaleless fish. Email me if you have any questions.

I would take the fish back, number one.

However, if you can't - they make tablets that you mix in with the water that is a sort of medicine for ich.

You have to take out about 1/2 of the water you have in there now, mix the tab with some more water, fill it back up and you have to do that once a day.

The tablets can be purchased at any fish store. Good luck !
