Moody is hard to work around.

Seriously moody, I would go and leave them to it.
I think if one tries to work around it when someone is in a "odd place", it can have the wrong effect.
Sometimes "modes" just have to be worked through by the person in it.
Say you care, but you will see them again another time.
Unless they ask for help, then you could ask, what type of help.
Sometimes, being funny is not what the person really needs.
Difficult question, and one has to be perceptive about it also and get some type of feel for what is the problem.
If you feel it is more than a mood, then you may need to re assess the situation and try to talk and get them to open up.
