the citizens of the country have a say in policy making. A pure democracy is one where this happens literally, but is not practical anymore. So we now resort to representative democracies, which is where we elect representatives who represent the people. A republic is a form of representative democracy because the government has its authority from the people...the government is there to represent the people and do its bidding. In the USA this is part of the great divide...that some believe government is there to serve the powerful and rich and others believe the government is there to be a government of the people by the people and for the benefit of the people. Certainly in recent years you can make the case that the powerful and rich have had their run of things.

Government by the people directly or via their elected representatives.
The idea that an elected majority can make decisions binding on all.
Most modern western democracies more accurately have an elected ruling elite, where certain politicians and their respective parties merely wait for their inevitable turn in office.
