There are hundreds of diferent strains of cannabis, and they have may different aromas; not all have what you might think of as a typical cannabis smell.
I suggest other plants may be the same, and that the smell you associate with cannabis - which may not be the smell we all associate with it - is probably something completely different.
I believe the cannabis plant is related to nettles; perhaps it is a nettle of sorts.

Hemp smells like cannabis which you also need a license to grow. Bird seed bought at the super market contains Hemp so it could be that the cops can smell. Also it could well be African hemp (Sparmannia africana) which looks exactly which the cops want. Dope. Cannabis is unlikely to do very well outside in the UK.

If the police can't find the source outside, it's more than likely an inside job. Smart dopers who grow indoors will often exhaust the grow room up a fireplace chimney to be carried high on the wind, where a dog can get. I'll bet I could find the house but I'm not that kind of guy. RScott

Perhaps there's a skunk holing up nearby? After all, there's a reason some varieties of weed are called "skunk." If the garden offers sufficient cover, it's also possible that someone is using it as a convenient place to smoke, not grow.

Hemp is cannabis, its usually made from them male plant as hemp requires no THC just material from the plants.
Sometimes I smell weed in the street too, but probably because I see weed in everything :D

I think french marigolds do, also some azaleas.
But I agree get better extraction that goes well out the way.
