I feel like this is a silly question, but I've never really owned a laptop before, and I'm making a rather large purchase of one with a Terrible battery life - highest rated on Cnet though, battery life is the only problem. Can I just turn off the computer and switch out the battery for a fully charged one? Like.. carry around 2-3 batteries, especially on trips or long carrides.

As long as you have the Power adapter for the laptop plugged in, you do not need the battery. If you are on the road and do not have a power outlet, then you can always shutdown your computer, switch out the battery, then turn your computer on again.

Think of it as a cell phone or a cordless phone with extra batteries =)

Make sure you have them fully charged though.

Yes, you can buy very expensive additional battery packs to switch out - requiring a computer shutdown and restart at every battery pack change.

In the car, there is no question about it. Get a power inverter. Plugs into the cigarette lighter ( politically correct term : 12 volt power supply) and you can use it indefinately. It plugs into the lighter outlet , goes through the converter, and gives you a plug for your computer. The computer is available for normal use while it is charging too.

It will proabably cost roughly 1/2 the price of a laptop battery pack. Do a search on ebay for a 12 volt power inverter that matches your new laptop's voltage and amperage (look on the bottom of the computer for the voltage ((read in V)) and amps ((mAh)).

At a wall based plug - of course it will work all the time. A car ride - it will work forever with the inverter. A commercial plane ride - then you have to rely on battery packs (unless you are in 1st class with a plug - or - have the flight attendant plug it in to charge for you. All commercial aircraft have a 120 volt plug in the cabin - not accesable to the passengers).

- Thats how you get mobile

Yes you can, but you will have to shutdown to switch them out. You may want to look around the net, you may be able to find a battery for your laptop that has a longer life.
