There are many chemical poisons you can use. The ants will carry them to their nest and the whole colony will die. You will have no trouble finding them in many shops.
If you prefer something a bit less ruthless, ants are repelled by mint oil, and also by nutmeg. Lemon juice is very effective; and not messy. Stake your territory with boundaries lined out in lemon juice, and the ants will not cross it. Talcum powder or bicarbonate of soda have the same effect, but are visible. But you have to keep doing it every other day or so, until the ants learn to associate your territory with repulsive odours and textures!
Alternatively, you could look for the nest and remove it, if it happens to be in one of your patio plant pots.
As ants are one of the few species that wage war on each other, the cowardly solution is to find two seperate colonies then to dig out half of one, and half of the other. The remix them in the wrong colony! They will then fight to the bitter end and wipe each other out! I swear, this is advice I was given once. I think it's just easier to dig out the whole colony and move it to some wasteland, as intact as possible!
Why do you want something you could use with water, if I may ask?
Boiling water alone would kill those on the surface, and the nest too, if you poured it on the nest directly .....
There are so many things you can do without resorting to harmful chemicals or genocide. If you just web search "ants", you can access lots of helpful sites and explore your options. Hopefully you'll find what suits you best!

Get a dish containing ant poison(ready made). The ants like the taste and take it as food to the queen and others in the nest.It kills them once and for all.Just leave a few of them around the patio and they will come to them.Next year put the dishes out as soon as you see ants and you will have an ant free summer.

get yourself 5 gallons of pickling vinegar, NOT the regular white vinegar it has to be for pickling. On a warm day pour the vinegar into any ant hills you see as well as any pathways that they are taking. It's like an acid to them and will kill them, but if it rains you may have to redo. The vinegar may work on the first go round, if not just repeat. Also if there are kids or pets it will not harm them.

If you`re going to use ant powder, make sure it contains a substance called Bendiocarb-its lethal to ants and very effective. You need to re-apply every 2 weeks to kill any new batch of eggs.Only down side is its not good for cats and dogs if they lick or sniff it....

Ant traps or ant spray works the best.
I prefer ant spray. Trust me I used to have the same problem in my garage.

large amounts of boiling water, and you can add what you want to it.such as bleach or washing up liquid, but boiling water does kill them.not so easy to fling boiling water on them,if they are in the house.
