We've always had pants. We only started calling them underpants because Americans can't spell trousers.

Good point! I haven't got a clue why. Mind you, some people like showing off their pants to the whole world, with their trousers hanging off their hips. Which, technically, means they are neither pants nor Underpants, hmm, maybe showpants?
'Knickers' are women's pants in the UK, whereas 'pants' are men's underwear, but I use 'pants' to describe both.

I think it's a cultural thing. Underpants, pants, knickers, briefs etc. all mean the same thing to me, it's the way I was brought up. I find it really weird when someone refers to trousers as pants, especially on here. I have to stop to consider what they are actually talking about.

we used to call them pants.but after superman found out about them we started calling them underpants so he would know while dressing where to wear them.he dosn`t seem to have got it right yet .lol

its from the old french root 'pantalons' - which are similar in experience to tights.
pants - meaning trousers - is an abhorrent Americanism
