My daughter was 12. She HATED pads. We bought the slim tampons. You are not going to rip, for heaven's sake.
Try Tampax Pearl, they are her fav. Follow the directions in the box.

Old enough to have a period.

It's probably good if she's comfortable with the idea of touching herself to insert it, and her parents don't have major objections, but there's really no reason to wait if you want to use them. If you don't want to, there's also no reason to! (And there's no reason you have to do one or the other - plenty of girls use pads most of the time and tampons for dance or swimming or such, or use tampons all day and a pad at night, stuff like that.)

For the first time, it helps to use the smallest size you can find and a low absorbency (use a pantyliner or pad with it the first few times to make sure you chose the right absorbency - that has nothing to do with how large your vagina is, but how heavy the period is; usually it's pretty light when you're young). It also helps to use them when your flow is the heaviest since if the flow is light and the vagina is dry, it can be difficult to remove.

Your body is physically ready for tampons the minute you get your first period. A tampon won't rip your vagina. It's just not possible. (Besides the vagina stretches, it has to so that we can give birth).

i agree with jason s, i think your mom doesnt want it to lead to sex. i actually talked to my mom about tampons not too long ago and she thought that i had sex before i started using tampons and that is why they were able to go in. i think you should explain to her what actually happens because back in the day they had no tampons and they dont know how the whole thing works
