The slandering of the ACLU has several political motivations.

The first was to make religious people feel that they are under threat and needed Republican protection.

The second was to weaken lawyers in general, since they overwhelmingly support the Democratic Party financially. This was part of the motivation behind 'tort reform', the other being a gift to the pharmaceutical industry by making 'exorbitant punitive damages' a bogeyman for exorbitant medical costs (falsely)

All part of the Karl Rove manipulation of apolitical citizens into the voting booth to vote against their own interests.
