Not far at all, because it may be hitting your cervix when u move certain ways. Where the string connects to the tampon should be right at the entrance. Its an easy reference point for you to remember. This place where the string attaches should not go inside the vagina much at all, just barely behind the entrance. Any farther and your just stretching urself more. And it has been found that tampons put too far in can cause leaking problems.

If it hurts it isn't in far enough. You should only be able to see the string, not the cotton of the tampon.
How to insert a tampon:
"Relax! Try not to worry about inserting the tampon right the first time. If you are tense it will make insertion harder.
The best time to practice inserting a tampon is during the heavy part of your period. The tampon should glide inside your vagina easily without any discomfort.
Decide if you prefer to insert the tampon standing or sitting. If sitting is your preference, sit on the toilet. If you want to try standing, putting one foot on the bathtub helps.
Hold the tampon applicator in your right hand if you are right-handed, or left if left-handed.
Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the bottom of the larger, outer tube.
Point the tip of the applicator toward your vagina, facing slightly towards the back. The smaller tube should be pointed away from your body.
Use your other hand to open your vagina.
Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of your vagina.
Gently push the smaller end of the applicator in until it is completely inside the larger outer tube. This pushes the tampon into your vagina and out of the tube.
With your thumb and middle finger still on the outer tube, release the smaller tube and let the strings dangle freely.
Gently pull the two tubes out together.
Dispose of the applicator according to the manufactuer's instructions.
When you are ready to remove the tampon, gently pull the withdrawl strings down and forward. The used tampon may be flushed down the toilet."

Putting a tampon in does hurt a little.
The tampon is supposed to go all the way in to the vagina. You're supposed to relax your muscles in order to make it easier to put in it.
If the tampon is inserted correctly, you should not feel it. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, you may have inserted the tampon incorrectly or the tampon may not be placed far enough into the vagina. If this happens, just remove the tampon and start again with a new tampon. Remember that practice makes perfect. If you don't get it on the first try, your second try will most likely be successful. Instead of getting frustrated and giving up, relax and try again!

Hmm... I've bought my woman's tampons before. She also keeps some in my bathroom. Ummm.. isn't there a lil' pamphlet inside with instructions? I'm a curious guy so I've read them before. They all say to be sure the use the proper absorbency for what kind of flow you will have that day. They say using a high absorbency when it is not needed will rid you of necessary bacterias that fight infection and can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome...... whatever that is. I'm not sure about the pain though. I don't see why it wouldn't. I mean it is a foreign object. About how far to put it in... you're just supposed to leave the string out right? Sorry if I didn't help enough.

Well dont FORCE it in. The first time that you wear tampons you may feel some discomfort, but if you have real PAIN, take it out and try again some other time. Also if you are a virgin, that may be why you have pain. I would take it out, and then try again in a few hours. Like I said, you will have a little discomfort at first, but then it will get better, if it does not, dont use them. Good luck.

If it doesn't go in far enough than it will hurt.
Hold the grips with your fingers. Push it in until your fingers touch your body. Then, push the applicater until its been pushed all the way. Then, remove it.
I suggest reading the box, it should have good instructions.
It might hurt a little bit, but just experiment with them to try to get it to hurt less.

sounds like you got it in crocked....when your siting or standing up place the tampon to where its straight in line with your lower spine (tailbone) put it in until your fingers (on the finger groves of the applicator) are touching skin...push on the end of applicator and it should be in comfortably and shouldn't be sticking out...being this is your first time using them you might need to put alittle water on the outside of the applicator for easy incertion...good luck!!!

They are going to be a bit uncomfortable for the first few times.
Look at the flier thing that came in the box it describes how they should be put in and how far in pictures so it will be much better than my trying to describe it. But they definitely need to be in all the way and then some.
Best of luck and welcome to womanhood! *HUG*
