My son and his friends went to someone's house and he (my son) stayed in the car while his friends bashed this girl's mailbox, what can happen to him? He wants to become a cop and I don't want him in trouble. He is 17 and never been grounded. He is always a good kid, so this really floors me. Can he go to jail?

More than likely fine, restitution and probation. Depending on your local laws, see if Youthful Offender or juvenile status can be obtained.

Next time, have your kid simply lean out of a moving car window with a bat: the mailbox explodes, with nobody around to be blamed...

In Texas, the penalty is death.

Ok, seriously:

Vandalism - a very minor misdemeanor and only if charges are pressed. I would go to your GF's parents house, fess up and offer to pay for the mailbox. I would have my son offer to help out as restitution. (mow their lawn, etc)

Federal offense to tamper with the mail, this includes mailboxes! Better to go to the cops and turn himself in and testify against his"FRIENDS".

Usually considered misdemeanor property damage. Restitution and possibly a fine. Doubt it will cause him problems in the future.
