All I want to do is not contribute anymore, I don't even care about the years of contributions already made. If I could have a guarantee that my money was going to retired people who put into the system I would have no issue with it. But the fact is that each paycheck I have to pay money that goes to people who don't care to work and are only a drain on the economy and society. I can't stand doing this anymore, it's bad enough that I'll never get anything out of it in the first place.

You may opt out of the social security system only for the time that you either work for the railroad system or are elected to Congress. Both groups have similar, but separate, systems and both systems are much better than social security. Both pay out more and congress people do not even have to pay in.

Oh. Did you want the right to plan for your own retirement?

Sorry.

We handed that right over to the feds a long time ago. Do you think they want to finally call off the emergency safety net program?

"You can count on Social Security, and with every fiber of my being, I will make sure it is there not only for my generation, but for my children’s generation and for my grandchild’s generation." - Barbara Boxer (I have faith in spite of all reason)

"What Mr. Bush proposes - allowing workers to divert some of their Social Security taxes into personal investment accounts in exchange for agreeing in advance to receive a much-reduced guaranteed government benefit when they retire - would neither provide retirement security, nor take care of the solvency of the Social Security system. And it would wreak havoc with the overall federal budget." - John Kerry (Hands off your money. We need it more)

"Democrats remain committed to standing up for working Americans and our seniors and rejecting any attempt to privatize Social Security. Democrats stopped this misguided approach in 2005 and will again in 2006 and beyond." - Harry Reid (So long as we can maintain fear of freedom in the electorate, the party line works for me)

You are paying into your own S.S. for your future.

You are confusing welfare with Social Security. It's all government run, but there are big differences.
