In Australian Aborigine tradition, they sleep with their dogs to keep warm. A three dog night is one that is cold enough to need three dogs to keep you warm.

Three Dog Night were an American Rock band. Their name came as follows:-

An official commentary included in the CD set Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story, 1965-1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton’s then-girlfriend June Fairchild thought of the name when she read a magazine article about Indigenous Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On cold nights they would sleep with two dogs, and if a night was especially cold, it was a “Three Dog Night.”

A "three dog night" is a very cold night when one would let the dogs in to sleep in the bed for the warmth. Dogs are, in fact, warmer than humans, so a bed with three dogs would be a comfy, though perhaps slobbery one.
