Clinical depression is caused by both a neurochemical imbalance and situational stressors. Antidepressant drugs are now often prescribed to persons with clinical depression to help correct the neurochemical imbalance.("clinical depression" here refers to people who have certain specific and long-term and debilitating symptoms such as apathy, sadness, and suicidal thoughts among other sensations--not people who get a little blue now and then) Persons treated for depression also sometimes receive some form of psychological counseling to help them modify behavior, cope, and resolve the situational cause of depression. The same holds true of persons who have anxiety disorders.
Therefore, in answer to your question, medication does not mask depression. It is a resource to help cure it.

No it doesn't cure it. I was medicated for depression once and it didn't help me at all.

It helps to a point. For some people, all they need is that extra seratonin in their bodies. For a lot of us, it's a mental thing, meaning that we have unresolved issues that need to be taken care of to help lessen the depression.
some people are more prone to it than others.
