How can someone be Christian and a Liberal? I would think your faith has a tremendous effect on your political views.

Most Christians aren't, but some are. I would have to question anyone who proclaims himself/herself to be a Christian and a liberal to find out where his/her loyalties truly are. You can still be a liberal and be against abortion, but you can't be a follower of Christ and be pro-choice. You can still be a liberal and oppose the welfare system, but you can't be a follower of Christ and support giving handouts to lazy people ("If a man will not work, then neither let him eat.") You can still be a liberal and disagree with the notion of animal rights, and you can still be a Christian and support animal rights, but you can't be a follower of Christ and say "Meat is murder." I know a few Christians who proclaim themselves to be liberals, and they still follow The Bible when it comes to issues like these. However, I know people who claim to be Christians and also purport themselves to be liberals, and their beliefs are in direct conflict with The Bible. That's OK though. God knows the difference.

Turn Your TV Channel from FOX News, read some US History regarding the 60's, and open your mind a little, and you will see that Christian Americans have always chosen the Democratic Party when issues of compassion and charity are under consideration.
From FDR's New Deal, thru LBJ's Civil Rights Act, the Dem's have always led with their hearts and their faith.
I love the Internet, and all the information and ideas available here, but so many narrow-minded people only use it to reinforce their uninformed prejudices. You, and millions of others, need to turn off your computers, and read a friggin' BooK ! Ever hear of those ??

How can you call yourself a christian and still support this fool for a president?I always thought Christians were supposed to seek and share the truth? The fact that he didn't even attempt to fulfill his oath of office by protecting us from foreign and domestic threats? If Bush is such a good christian why did he resist any investigation into 9/11 for more then a year? Why couldn't he testify in public before the 9/11 commission? Why did he only "discuss" the events off the record behind closed doors?
Also why did he lie to the people by saying anyone in his administration who helped leak a CIA agents identity would be fired and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law? Then gave "Scooter" Libby a get out of jail card? While allowing his buddy Carl Rove, who admitted to having helped,to remain at his post?

Because everything is becoming so flexible and losing all the core traditional beliefs that people do not know the true meaning of it all. And that goes for both liberalism and religion.

People give excuses and make up ways to stretch the meaning out to pertain to them. Soon that little "let it go by" mentality will become a worldwide problem. But no matter what cannot ever, ever change the true meaning of the bible because it will always come back prove what the real meaning is, no matter how much it has been changed and given different meanings.

I am an Independent with liberal leanings. I find the Christians on the Republican side of things much scarier than Christians should be. It's the whole love thy neighbor as thyself thing that they choose to ignore... And they are much more likely to try to force their brand of Christianity on me. My faith is mine alone, I don't need to wear it like a badge.

And since I feel politics and religion are best left on opposite sides of the room, I don't like the idea that the Christian Right is trying to legislate morality.

I'm christian and some of my political views are different that what my faith tells me to do and this is why. I believe in social welfare. Women performing back ally abortions is going to be more detrimental to our society than having it done in a clinic regulated by the government. It is going to happen whether you outlaw it or not. I would rather know that women are safe than flooding emergency rooms b/c they have nowhere to turn to. A healthy society is more important than my faith. That is what our founding fathers had in mind.

It's easy. Liberal domestic ideology is actually quite in keeping with Christ's greatest commandment, 'Love thy neighbor as yourself.'

Unless 'Thou shalt use My Name for cynical political gain' or 'Thou shalt prey on little boys' is in the Bible, I don't see how Republicans are shining examples of Christianity.

But who knows? All this is very subjective.
Yours in Christ,
Ken

your seeing the world from only your eyes. everyone is different, and everyone has a different relationship with God. And, assuming you are a Christian, you must concede that you have no place to judge that relationship. Not everyone is a Christian like you are a Christian.

It's very possible to be a Liberal and Christian, if you believe that God is a God of mercy and forgiveness, of kindness and love.
